Why do people pay?

I came across this interesting piece of topic when I was in a meeting with my colleagues in the office.
The basic agenda of the meeting was to understand the business goal of a project so that the teams activities can be properly aligned towards it.

People pay because
1. It is something that needs to be done as in need-of-the-hour.
2. It is new and innovative and people want to cash in on it.
3. The look-good factor.
4. The feel-good factor.

Whatever people do, it will fall into one of these categories and hence people get their salaries.
If one wants to learn how the business is run, it typically falls into one of these factors. We understand what the business is trying to gain and we align the activities accordingly, then there is a win-win.
